Artistic Director

Albert Tay

Albert has served as Artistic Director of the International Festival Chorus Singapore since January 2009.  He is also Assistant Conductor for the SYC Ensemble Singers (formerly Singapore Youth Choir).  As conductor and educator, he seeks to cultivate well-trained hearts, minds, ears, and singer-musicians through music games and exercises.  After nearly a decade of professional work with choirs, ensembles in his care have blossomed gracefully and garnered excellent reviews, gold awards and top prizes in choral festivals locally and abroad.

A life-long learner, Albert was selected to study with Maestro Helmut Rilling (Stuttgart Bach Collegium, Germany) at the 2010 Taipei Bach Festival and Maestro Gábor Hollerung (Hungary) at the 2009 Taiwan International Choral Festival.  Albert represented the Asia South Pacific region as an active masterclass participant under the tutelage of Prof. Theodora Pavlovitch (State Academy of Music, Bulgaria) in the 7th World Symposium for Choral Music, organized by the International Federation for Choral Music.  He has also worked with established pedagogues such as Dr László Nemes (Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music), Kari Turunen (Finnish Choral Director’s Association), Alberto Grau (Schola Cantorum de Venezuela) and Gary Graden (Stockholm Musikgymnasium).  Currently studying composition with Leong Yoon Pin and Dr Kelly Tang, Albert’s works have been performed in and outside of Singapore.

Albert majored in voice and studied choral conducting with Jennifer Tham and orchestral conducting with Dr Robert Casteels at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, graduating with a Diploma in Music with Distinctions and BA (Hons) from the University of Wales (UK). Having previously served as a volunteer Teaching Assistant for the “NAFA Chamber Choir” and “Choral Training & Direction” module (2006-07), he is now teaching choral conducting as lecturer for “Choral Training & Direction” at his alma mater.

Albert is a recipient of the National Arts Council (Singapore) Georgette Chen Scholarship, National Arts Council (Singapore) Arts Bursary, as well as the NAFA Scholarship for his diploma and degree studies.
